As a member of the Not the Telegraph discussion forum on Disqus, the moderator posed a very interesting and salient question...
"Is the old left/right Political divide outmoded in the UK? Could parties realign along nationalist/globalist lines? For clarity...
Nationalist here meaning a Nation working with the world;
Globalist here meaning the world working in a Nation."
My reply was as follows:-
Japan is not berated for its "protectionist" policies. It is proudly nationalistic. Saudi Arabia is nationalistic, for itself that is, but very keen to spread its malign influence over other countries/regions (but that is a religious thing or is it political?) so it has a foot in both camps. The EU and the USA pre #MAGA were decidedly globalist, the Democrats were the mouthpieces of the very people that socialists are supposed to despise but, it would appear, everyone has a price (look at Bernie Sanders). There were also Republicans spouting similar globalist rhetoric which spawned the term RINOS.
New Labour in the UK was the beginning of the real decline of our political system, after them all the parties started to merge into one homogeneous mass, leaving UKIP as the only real alternative for change, but British voters declined to vote for them in significant enough numbers, although their lack of success was not helped by the ridiculous first past the post system in play in the UK and also fell foul of the propaganda machine of "a vote for Labour is a vote for the SNP" which scared enough undecided voters to cast a tactical vote as opposed to a perspicacious one.
Here in France, they seem to vote with their emotions, they knew that the socialists were screwing them over so they voted in Sarko. Sarko tried to implement too much change too quickly (the French REALLY don't like change) so he had to go. Hollande is about as much use as a cat flap in an elephant house, something the French realised quite early on in his tenure, but they are a pragmatic lot so they have bided their time.
The rumblings about the migrants and the gradual Islamification of certain areas was mainly contained in the areas where the indigenous French were most affected, the media has a very strong hold over the French so they can control the narrative easier here than in the UK or USA. There are not enough French who can speak and read/write in English so their world view is limited to how the intelligentsia choose to translate news from English-speaking countries. However all that being said, Charlie Hebdo, the Bataclan and Nice were such huge atrocities that the French authorities and press could not keep a lid on things and they have been fighting fires and extending emergency powers ever since. No matter how much mud they sling at Marine Le Pen none of it is sticking. Although I did read a disturbing interview with Manuel Valls about the possibility of a FN win and his claims were and still are eye watering!

So in summary, left and right nomenclatures are now obsolete and we are entering into a new era of Rationalism/Populism/Nationalism against Globalism/Communism/Islamism. The outcome remains to be seen.
