After the letter, orchestrated by Downing Street, declaring that the UK would be safer within the EU was published yesterday, it transpires that one of the signatories was not in fact in agreement with this statement! Subsequently, Downing Street have admitted that the inclusion of his name was an "administrative error".
One of the 6 O'clock BBC News headline articles on Wednesday 24th February 2016 was about the safety and security of the UK outside the EU and the letter that was signed by many retired senior ranking officers. However, tonight's broadcast has NOT reported on the suspect nature of this letter, which indicates to me that the BBC are not likely to be adopting a unbiased view of the campaign and that British citizens must seek elsewhere for the facts to make an informed decision on.
Ex-Special Forces General Sir Michael Rose has stated that " I happen to believe sovereignty and security are intrinsically linked and in recent years we’ve seen the EU erode our sovereignty,”.
Also in question is the addition of another high-ranking retired officer who felt pressured into signing the letter. Field Marshal Lord Bramall, felt that he had been made to sign the letter as a "fait accompli".
Several other high ranking retired officers did not sign the Downing Street letter, indeed one former senior officer declined the invitation to sign the letter because of his deep concerns of the potential threat existing EU policies pose. That's as it is now, should we decide to remain in the EU heaven knows what sorts of defence policies they will instigate!!
